A family history of violence and abuse is liberated through strength and will, and grief gives way to loving determination and promise. Pairing an aural mix of memoir, documentary, and personal essay with evocative, revivifying waterscapes, I’m not a river, I’m the sea co-directors and co-producers, María Isabel Muñoz and Tony Meneses, create a literary cinematic work that is at once vulnerable and fierce.

About the Artists

María Isabel Muñoz Flores: Born on September 10, 1965 in Puebla, Mexico. Since she was a child, at about 8 years old, she was attracted to cinema and participated in it through acting with independent filmmakers who visited her hometown, San Antonio Juarez, where they made small films and then screened them in the town center. Her family and husband kept her away from cinema until, along with her son, a film student, she ventured to not only be the protagonist of a documentary but also a documentary filmmaker. Director, producer and sound designer of the documentary essay film "I am not a river, I am a sea."

Tony Meneses Muñoz: Born and raised in Puebla, México. Currently pursuing a degree in Cinematography at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Photographer and filmmaker, admirer of Mexican culture, of humanity in its most sensitive aspect and the fantastic vision of reality. His love for photography and cinema has led him to be part of collective exhibitions such as "Lejanías" and to carry out projects in collaboration with studios such as Kraneo Estudio.
